PERMANENT EXHIBITION - ROOM JULIO
1 November 1902 – 17 January 1983, Vila do Conde
Júlio Maria dos Reis Pereira was a poet, a painter and a civil engineer. He attended the Painting course in Escola de Belas Artes do Porto and illustrated the magazine Presença, directed by his brother and poet José Régio, who wrote and prefaced Julio’s exhibition. He signed his visual art as Julio and used the pseudonym Saúl Dias in his literary work. He is believed to have been one of the first artists to introduce Surrealist imagery in Portugal, back in the 1930s. In 1941, he married Maria Augusta da Silva Ventura and from that union, his only son was born José Alberto Ventura Reis Pereira, who bequeathed part of his father’s visual art to the FCM. Consequently, since 2020, the Museum has dedicated this room to the artist with the highest representation in the collection.
