Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos was born in Lisbon on 9 August, 1923, and died in the same city on 26 November, 2006, aged 83. He was a poet, painter, translator and considered one of the great Masters of Visual and Literary Portuguese Surrealism. He met some of those who would accompany him on the Surrealist adventure at Escola António Arroio (Lisbon). He co-founded the Grupo Surrealista de Lisboa (1947) and Os Surrealistas (1948). He played a leading role in the Surrealist Movement for pioneering new techniques, exploring materials and imbuing humour, irony, criticism, irreverence and drama.
