PERMANENT EXHIBITION - TRIPTYCH ‘A VIDA: ESPERANÇA, AMOR, SAUDADE’

This corner presents ‘Life’ which is considered the work that best represents the Portuguese visual Symbolism by António Carneiro. It is a remarkable artpiece that strongly breaks with the kind of art produced in Portugal at the time, representing a new ideological input in Portuguese art. In 1977, it was donated by the Founders.

António Teixeira Carneiro Júnior was born on 16 September, 1872 (Amarante) and died on 31 March, 1930 (Porto). He was a painter, poet, illustrator, artistic director, teacher and clerk and he is remembered as a melancholy, mystical and withdrawn man. During his lifetime, he was an artist who maintained a relatively restricted circle of admirers and whose work gained exposure and the historical depth it deserves only thanks to the work of researchers.
